The idea to develop the area was started by James McIntosh, who learnt to ski many years ago at The Lecht with a tractor tow. Meeting up with Pieter du Pon (ex British Ski Team) during their combined time in the Fleet Air Arm a plan was hatched to develop the Lecht. The only thing at the Lecht before 1977 was a lay-by for three cars at the cattle grid. The A939 roads's claim to fame was the often reported winter road closure of the Cockbridge to Tomintoul Road. The ability to attract and hold snow was then turned to an advantage.

The Company was formed in December 1977 with the help of Ronnie Winram and Professor Jim Petrie as well as many family and friends.
The Lecht has always expanded on a modular basis, reinvesting all the generated funds and now has a car park capacity of over 800 cars; uplift capicity over 10,000 skiers per hour, a major new building housing all the facilities under one roof and a summer business with Mountain Bike Trails and other rides.
